GPT-5.1 Option for Smarter Comparison Summaries

Thu 18 Dec 2025

As a technology leader, you're constantly seeking solutions that not only streamline workflows but also elevate the quality of your work. That’s why Litera is thrilled to introduce a major enhancement to our AI capabilities within Litera One and Lito: the ability to choose between GPT-4o and the cutting-edge GPT-5.1 model for generating Comparison Summaries.

This update gives your firm unparalleled flexibility. You can customize document comparison workflows to fit your needs, including speed, accuracy, or compliance. For teams handling complex agreements and high-stakes projects, this level of customization provides a powerful strategic edge.

Why Offer Multiple GPT Models?

The ability to choose a generative AI model is about empowering your firm to tailor its technology to its unique operational requirements. While our existing GPT-4o model has set a high standard for speed and consistency, the introduction of GPT-5.1 offers a new level of analytical power.

This choice matters for several key reasons:

  • Improved Accuracy and Quality: Newer models like GPT-5.1 generally produce more accurate, fluent, and context-aware summaries. For complex legal documents with subtle but critical changes, this can greatly lower the need for manual review and editing.
  • Workflow Consistency: If your current processes are built around the output style of GPT-4o, you can maintain that consistency. This ensures that previously validated summaries remain aligned until your firm is ready to transition to the new model.
  • Internal Compliance and Governance: Many firms and corporate legal departments are subject to strict regulations or client mandates regarding AI usage. The ability to select—and document—the model used for a given comparison summary helps meet these obligations. You can continue using an established model like GPT-4o while the newer GPT-5.1 undergoes internal validation.

A Tale of Two Models: GPT-4o vs. GPT-5.1

Understanding the strengths of each model is crucial for making an informed decision. The choice between GPT-4o and GPT-5.1 is not about which is "better" overall, but which is better suited for a specific task or priority.

Your Litera One administrator can configure the preferred model at the organization level, ensuring a consistent and standardized approach across all users and matters.

When to Use GPT-4o

GPT-4o is the ideal choice for speed and consistency. Consider recommending its use in the following scenarios:

  • High-Volume Processing: When teams need to process a large number of documents quickly
  • Prioritizing Speed: For workflows where the fastest possible turnaround is the primary concern
  • Maintaining Consistency: To ensure that new summaries match the style and format of past outputs generated by the same AI model
  • Model Availability: As a reliable fallback to ensure business continuity

When to Upgrade to GPT-5.1

GPT-5.1 excels in accuracy, handling complexity, and reducing manual intervention. It is the superior choice for situations demanding the highest level of precision:

  • Highest Accuracy Requirements: When the goal is to capture every nuance and detail with maximum precision
  • Complex or Nuanced Documents: For analyzing intricate contracts, settlement agreements, or regulatory filings where subtle changes can have significant implications
  • Minimizing Human Review: To generate summaries that are so reliable they require minimal to no manual editing, freeing up legal professionals for higher-value work
  • Showcasing Cutting-Edge AI: To demonstrate to clients and internal stakeholders that the firm is leveraging the most advanced technology available

Key Questions Answered for Your Team

As you discuss this new capability with your firm's IT leaders and administrators, several questions are likely to arise. Here are some key points to answer questions for your team:

Who can select the GPT model?

Only Litera One administrators can change the GPT model for the organization. This is an environment-wide setting, meaning the selected model (either GPT-4o or GPT-5.1) will be used to generate all Comparison Summaries across the firm. This ensures consistency and simplifies governance. End-users cannot switch between models on an individual basis.

Can we use different models for different practice groups?

Currently, the model selection applies to the entire organization. It is not possible to enable GPT-5.1 for one practice group while another remains on GPT-4o. This unified approach guarantees that all users are operating under the same standard.

Which workflows does this apply to?

This model selection feature is currently available for the Comparison Summaries workflow within the Litera One Compare Web App and Lito.

Is this available to all customers?

Yes, the flexibility to choose between GPT-4o and GPT-5.1 is available to all Litera One customers (Base, Pro, and Advanced) who use the Comparison Summaries feature.

Empower Your Firm with Smarter Summaries

The introduction of GPT-5.1 into the Litera ecosystem represents more than just a feature update; it’s a strategic enhancement designed to give your firm a competitive edge. By providing the flexibility to choose between speed and advanced accuracy, you can align your comparison summary technology directly with your business objectives.

We encourage you to discuss this update with your IT administrators and legal teams. Evaluate your current workflows and determine where the enhanced precision of GPT-5.1 could deliver the most value. This new capability can help reduce write-offs, boost client confidence, and free up valuable time for attorneys.
